Introduction

The Carnegie Museum of Art developed this guideline for CMOA employees, but hope it’s helpful for other Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh producers and communications teams.

The CMOA Digital Media Guidelines are here to help you think about inclusivity and to write well-structured content, that is accessible to all audiences across our many digital publishing channels. The following examples are for you to research and explore. Please use it as a reference when you’re developing digital content for CMOA.

This guide is a companion to the CMOA publishing Style Guide which goes into detail about the museum’s textual conventions and written style.

Getting Started

We’ve divided the guide into two main areas; Reference and Production.

  • Reference offers a quick review of the necessary elements for designing and structuring content.

  • Production illustrates how these elements come together to form articles, calendar events, video, web pages, and other accessible media.

The entire guide is searchable, so you can go straight to the item you’re looking for.

Access & Feedback

We are in the early stages developing these guidelines. We have borrowed heavily from many other public sources including the WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices, Web Accessibility in Mind, Deque, Tenon, and Mozilla Developer Network. The guide structure is based around the open-source MailChimp Content Style Guide. For now, this guide is private and available internally to subscribers. As we groom the content we may decide to publish this content more widely. We welcome any feedback for improving this resource.

This documentation is stored on GitHub, CMOA Digital Media Guidelines.
