Settings for iOS

Setting up a new iOS device requires basic adjustment to the default settings of the operating system. The following is for reference.

Looking to access the settings of a deployed iPad?

All iPads running in the gallery have various levels of security to prevent unwanted user interactions. Guided Access creates a kiosk-like mode that helps prevent users from changing the gallery experience. To get past these initial settings, triple-click the home button and the device should prompt you with a passcode to disable Guided Access. See 1Password for the passcode. To turn Guided Access back on, triple-click the home button and tap the area that says Guided Access.

Adjusting iOS settings for a new or reconfigured iPad

First, set up device for iPad Management. Then follow these steps to adjust the settings before deploying the device.

Note that these settings change frequently as the OS develops and changes over time. The following list is a good reference but by no means exhaustive or necessarily up to date.

Remove all unnecessary apps

Touch and hold any app icon until all icons “shake” then touch the “x” badge icon to remove the application from the interface. Note, apps are not “deleted” only removed from access.

To reinstall apps on a device managed by JAMF, use the Volume Purchasing Program from Apple. You can access VPP through the JAMF interface. Login to https://login.jamfnow.com/, go into the interface for a device > Blueprint > Web Development > Apps > + Add an App
